Chamber urges representatives to re-authorize “Forest Reserve” funding

October 7, 2011

On behalf of the Mt. Shasta Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, I am writing to urge you to support the re-authorization of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act.

This source of funding, which is used primarily to support public education and the maintenance of the public roads here in Siskiyou County, is a vital part of the local economy.  The estimated 9 million dollars that Siskiyou County would not receive as its share of the revenues generated on the public lands within the county, would have a devastating effect on our local communities.

The importance of local public schools and local infrastructure such as roads and bridges cannot be overstated in a healthy business climate.  Increasing class sizes, loss of elective course offerings, loss of extra- curricular activities such as art, music, sports and drama all have a negative impact on the public school system, which is the lifeblood of a small rural community.   Additionally, the ability to get our goods and services to market and our employees to work is dependent upon roads being plowed and repaired when needed.

This compromise between the local residents and the federal government dates back to 1908 when President Teddy Roosevelt’s administration acknowledged that the lands that were being set aside for the public good also had value to the local residents.  As such, the local residents are entitled to a share of the revenues generated from those public lands since those same lands cannot be used in private enterprise, thereby generating tax revenue to maintain public schools and roads with.

This is not a charitable contribution by the federal government to the local community.  This is a continuation of a compromise worked out long ago – a compromise that has been working to the mutual advantage of the multitude of American citizens who travel to see and experience their lands, and the local residents of those lands who live, work and play here.

I urge you to support the re-authorization of this funding mechanism and to set it on a path for long term stability.  Short term extensions of this funding do not allow the local community to set long term goals, rather they force the community to always be preparing for the next cut in services.  The local business community depends on stability in government policies so that it can thrive.

Thank you for your time and consideration of this important issue for the residents of Siskiyou County.

Sincerely,

Vince Reinig
President of the Board, Mt. Shasta Chamber of Commerce

The Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce sent this letter to senators Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein and Congressman Wally Herger on October 7th, 2011

Autumn Greetings!

As the seasons are changing, so is the farmers’ market.
The summer crops are slowing down a bit and the fall crops are beginning to appear.
Some growers are done for the season, which creates space and an opportunity for new growers and vendors.

This week Scott River Ranch, near Etna, will be selling their local organic meats. Their stall will be located near the north end of market where Rocky Road Farm was.  They are new to the market; stop by and welcome them to our friendly market.

There is still time to check with growers about seasonal specials on produce for canning, freezing, dehydrating, and pickling…
not to mention just plain eating!

Hope to see you at market.

Kirsten

The Farmers’ Market is located on the 400 block of Mount Shasta Boulevard in Mount Shasta. It is open Mondays from 3:30 pm to 6 pm

This Saturday! 15th Annual Panther Meadows Community Restoration Day

The annual Panther Meadows Community Restoration Day and Plant Walk will be held Saturday September 24th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mount Shasta. This 15th yearly event is a collaboration of the H.O.M.E. (Honor Our Mountain Environment) Stewardship Project of the Mount Shasta Bioregional  Ecology Center, and the USFS Mount Shasta Ranger District. The new District Ranger, Carolyn Napper, will attend the event, among others. All are welcome to participate in the event.

Volunteers have the option to either meet in the lower Ski Bowl parking area at 10 a.m., or carpool at 9:30 a.m. from the Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center at 418 South Mount Shasta Boulevard  (across from Mike and Tony’s Restaurant) in Mount Shasta City.

Participants should bring a lunch and be prepared to work outdoors. Sturdy shoes and a hat are recommended, as well as work gloves. All tools will be provided.

During the event, volunteers from the community join with the dedicated meadow monitors who take care of the area during the summer months into fall. People who have been up to Panther Meadows recently have noticed how lush it looks, especially this year when everything seems to be blooming at once. Gathering together to care for this beautiful inspiring place is truly a joyful experience!

The plan this Saturday is to do some planting in sensitive areas in the meadow and also among the stepping stone path that crosses the upper meadow, as well as other restoration work in overused areas. Some of the species that will be planted include arnica, wild onion and sedges.

On the Plant Walk led by botanist Twyla Miller, participants will learn to identify native flora and gather seeds from plants in the upper and lower meadows to be propagated in the Forest Service greenhouse for next year’s planting. A highlight of the day is when everyone gathers for lunch to learn about some of the lore of the area from heritage resources manager Julie Cassidy and resident naturalist Johnny Dame. Members of the Winnemen Wintu Tribe have been invited to participate.
