Railroad tour brings passengers to South County

This year’s Dunsmuir Railroad Days has a new exciting addition to the growing list of events.  An excursion passenger train is coming out of the San Francisco Bay Area and bringing folks to Dunsmuir on Friday June 10, 2011 arriving approximately 4:30pm.

This special charter train is being called the Dunsmuir Shasta Daylight and will make stops at Emeryville, Martinez, Davis, Sacramento, Chico and Redding to pick up folks wanting to take part in the celebrations.

This train will return to the Bay Area on Sunday June 12, 2011 departing Dunsmuir at 9:00am with an arrival back in Emeryville at 5:00pm.  The same station stops will be made on the return journey to the Bay Area.

Additionally, the same passenger equipment will make a run from Dunsmuir north to Black Butte and return on Saturday June 11, 2011.  This excursion  is called the Black Butte Daylight and will cater to folks coming to Dunsmuir by highway on Saturday and wanting to experience a real train ride.

The Black Butte Daylight will depart Dunsmuir at 4:00pm and head north a round  the Cantara Loop and pass Mt. Shasta City on it’s way to Black Butte where the train will be turned around on the old former Southern Pacific wye track for the journey down the mountain to Dunsmuir.  This 46 mile roundtrip is scheduled to take three hours and with the long days of June will operate all in daylight hours.   This is a wonderful experience for the whole family.

Also there will be the opportunity to book a ticket on the Black Butte Daylight dinner option.  Dinner tickets are being offered in the last two cars of the train onboard the former California Zephyr Vista Dome streamlined passenger cars.  Dinner will be served both in the Vista Domes and the lower levels.

This will feature professional uniformed staff offering first class luxury service with freshly prepared meals by the chef in the galley, fully stocked open bar, snacks, and hors d’ oeuvres. Tables will be set with white crested damask tablecloths marked for the original California Zephyr, along with registered china patterns of CZ design, fresh cut flowers and much more.

Tree lighting in Mount Shasta on black Friday

Locals and visitors are invited to gather in front of the Mt. Shasta City Hall, 305 N. Mt.  Shasta Blvd.  on Friday Nov. 26th for old fashioned caroling while waiting for the arrival of Santa.

The evening begins at 5:30 pm by Pastor Gary Van De Walker of the Evangelical Free Church, followed by a special performance by “Heaven & Earth”. The Mt Shasta HS Cheerleaders will spread a little Christmas cheer. Special guests, along with the COS Children’s Choir, will be leading all in the Christmas Carols, and at 5:50 pm candles will be lit. (Note: The candles handed out will be battery operated. You are welcome to bring your own wax candles if that is preferred).  Hot chocolate and apple cider will be available for purchase from Strawberry Valley 4-H. At 6:00 pm the Christmas tree lights will be switched on, followed by Santa arriving on a city fire truck.

This year Santa will greet children at his workshop, set up in the Fire Station. Enjoy hot chocolate and cookies, and hear their Christmas wishes.

Many stores, shops and galleries in the downtown area will be open late for holiday browsers and shopping. Enjoy freshly roasted chestnuts while you shop, have your picture taken with Santa or in a holiday decorated cart pulled by an adorable miniature horse.
