South Valley Movers thrives in Siskiyou County

L to R: Ed Valenzuela, Supervisor District 2; Ken Abbott, owner/operator; Daniel Carpenter, loader/mover, and Tom Moore, Mt Shasta Chamber of Commerce Representative.

“After 30 years in the relocation business in the San Jose area, this was supposed to be semi-retirement” says Ken Abbott, owner/operator of South Valley Movers. This full-service moving and storage company has been on-going since 1989 in the South Bay area, and after building a home in the McCloud area, Ken thought a satellite operation in Siskiyou County would be advantageous. It makes him the only licensed insured mover within 30 miles. “Traditionally there’s been so little activity here that it is more of a part time hobby than a job”. Now, however, after joining both the Mt. Shasta and the McCloud Chambers, advertising in local phone books and contacting all the storage lockers and realtors, things have picked up.”I specialize in relocating fine household goods but we’ve moved several businesses in town as well. I visit each customer for a walk-through and quote, and then I am present for the entire move, so I am very hands-on.”

Ken’s company can also completely box and prep your location before the move, making your relocation much less stressful.

Whether he’s moving your couch across town or relocating your entire home to another city, Ken’s motto “Handling all your household goods with care and respect” rings true, move after move. Ken can be reached at his home/office at 530-964-3216 or on his mobile 408-309-2974.

Mt. Shasta welcomes new owners of the Wayside Grill

L to R: Terry Taforo, Chamber of Commerce Representative; Terry & Denise Eilers, Owners; Ellen Coleman and Tom Moore, Chamber of Commerce Representatives

Lately there is an unmistakable excitement throughout the north state, regarding the newly reopened Wayside Grill located at 2217 S. Mt. Shasta Boulevard, a Siskiyou County landmark since the 1950’s.

It appears that the new owners of the Wayside Grill, Denise and Terry Eilers and Rich and Elaine Barber, have created a near perfect combination of a diverse menu, great food, excellent service, compelling ambiance and live music. The result: A quintessential little café and roadhouse has quickly grown into one of the most popular restaurants in the county. Featuring a full bar, substantial wine and bottled beer list, in addition to 12 beers on tap, the Wayside Grill is also a favorite watering hole for locals and travelers alike.

Even before you enter the Wayside Grill you are met with the wonderful smoky aroma of the wood fired brick oven, where gourmet pizzas and specialty dishes are baked at a blazing 600 degrees. In addition to the thin-crust, hand tossed, Italian style pizza, the nicely appointed lunch and dinner menus feature numerous half-pound burgers, steaks, pasta, Baja tacos, salads, fish, chicken and Chipotle BBQ. Also, other specialty items include Cuban chicharones, sweet potato fries and roasted red pepper humus. If you love homemade soups, the Wayside has some award winners including their extraordinary Cajun shrimp and lobster bisque, served every Friday.

Live music also plays a part of the overall Wayside experience. Local entertainers as well as touring musicians play a wide variety of music. Terry and Denise, usually hands on cooking and serving, occasionally take a break to play and sing a few songs.

Situated in a beautiful location with views of Mt. Shasta from the main dining room and the Eddy Mountains from the large outdoor deck and back yard, the Wayside offers indoor and outdoor dining at its best. The Wayside is open for lunch and dinner from 11 AM to 9 PM daily, later on weekends and the bar is open from 11AM until closing. After the many changes over the years, it is good to see the Wayside Grill has finally found a unique and successful identity. Call 530-918-9234 for more information or to make a reservation.

Mt Shasta Fitness new and improved

L to R: Paige Bullerwell & Vince Reinig, Chamber of Commerce Representatives, Linda Stremel, Physical Therapist/Owner; Karen Reginatto, Tanning Salon Owner; Linda Valenzuela, Personal Trainer/General Manager; Tom Moore, General Manager/Owner;  Keith Cool, Chamber of Commerce Representative; Joe Champagne, Physical Therapist/Owner; Michael Murray, Mayor of Mt. Shasta.

Mt Shasta Fitness has reopened following repairs from winter storm damage.  On January 25th, amid loud frightening cracking and groaning, the roof at Mt Shasta Fitness at 1630 South Mt Shasta Blvd. sagged and failed.  An internal wall bowed and threatened to collapse.  The facility was condemned as a danger to the public.  Crews quickly removed snow from the roof and started the 2-month process of removing and replacing the damaged roof.  During the reconstruction, the entire main central portion of the historic structure was rebuilt from the ground up.  The facility reopened on April 1.

The results of the reconstruction are a spacious, light, open room housing the free weights and weight stack exercise equipment.  Mirrors line the walls, and members have expressed delight at the new look and openness.  The facility now boasts a “spin room” dedicated to the popular spin bike classes.  Spin classes feature an instructor, upbeat music, and the camaraderie of fellow cyclists.

Mt Shasta Fitness (formerly The Racquetball Club) is a satellite location of The Wellness Center and Mt Shasta Physical Therapy.  Owners of the Corporation are Linda Stremel, Tom Moore, Jennifer Pentrack, Joe Champagne, and Jason Koster.  The General Manager of the corporation is Tom Moore.  The Mt Shasta Fitness facility is managed by Linda Valenzuela and is open Monday through Friday from 5am to 11pm and weekends from 7am to 9pm.  Call 925-3589 for more information.

Siskiyou Land Trust has moved

L. to R: Michael Murray Mayor of M. Shasta, John Brennan – Board President, Janet Zalewski – Executive Director, Kathleen Hitt – Conservation Director, Mt. Shasta Chamber of Commerce representative Scotty Bates

The Siskiyou Land Trust is a local conservation organization that works with landowners to protect open spaces, agricultural lands, forestlands, wetlands, scenic viewsheds, and wildlife habitat in Siskiyou County.

After enjoying several years in the Weed Mercantile building, the Siskiyou Land Trust is thrilled to have a new office location near Sisson Meadow (522 Alma Street).  The Siskiyou Land Trust purchased Sisson Meadow in 2002 to protect an unobstructed view of Mt. Shasta and to protect the meadow’s ecological, recreational, and educational values for the benefit of the community.  Since that time, the land trust has partnered with several local organizations, schools, and individuals to develop trails and benches, restore the meadow wetlands, and provide an outdoor classroom for all to enjoy.  The land trust is currently working with several landowners in Siskiyou County who are interested in permanent protection of their agricultural lands, forest lands, and wetlands.

If you are interested in learning more about the Siskiyou Land Trust and its current activities, please attend our annual member meeting on Wednesday April 14th at Sisson Museum in Mt. Shasta.  Doors open at 5:30 for refreshment and the meeting begins at 6:00.   We look forward to sharing our accomplishments and organizational goals with the community.  Sign-ups will be available for several volunteer opportunities – including participation in land trust projects and committees, Sisson Meadow stewardship, leading summer hikes, and coordinating a native plant and vegetable garden at the new office.  You can also learn more about the Siskiyou Land Trust by stopping by our office, visiting our website: http://www.siskiyoulandtrust.org/, or finding us on facebook.

Welcome to Canyon Acupuncture!

L. to R: David Filipello, L.Ac., Chamber representative Vicky Zanni

Canyon Acupuncture is located at 6109 Rose Ave in historic Dunsmuir, CA, a place of healing, nurturing and preventative care. Where Heaven meets earth under the watchful eye of Mt. Shasta’s peak, along where the mighty Upper Sacramento River flows. This successful practice was established 5 years ago by David Filipello, L.Ac., a licensed acupuncturist by the State of California. Mr. Filipello brings his 30+ years of Traditional Chinese Medicine experience to the Siskiyou County area to serve the needs of his community.

Mr. Filipello states “I strongly feel that the medicine of the future is an integration of Alernative and Allopathic (Western medicine as we know it) modalities. My calling as a healer influences my possibility as an educator. Like the Great Tao, neither Alternative nor Allopathic medicine is better – they are only parts of the whole. Together they offer a complete and holistic healing by complementing the human body’s power to heal itself.”

Traditional Chinese Medicine, like many alternative medicines, approaches balanced health by addressing the body’s Qi, or energy, in such a way as to benefit the whole of the body – the physical, the emotional and spiritual bodies. By doing so, harmony can be attained and many illnesses can be dealt with preventatively before they can manifest. Lao Tzu, a famed Chinese healer and philosopher once said “Anticipate the difficult by managing the easy.” Canyon Acupuncture offers convenient office hours Monday thru Friday by appointment only. Fees are on a sliding scale and many insurance plans are accepted. Appointments can be made by calling 530-235-4054. For further information on Canyon Acupuncture or David Filipello, L.Ac please look online at www.canyonacupuncture.com.
