Welcome to Canyon Acupuncture!

L. to R: David Filipello, L.Ac., Chamber representative Vicky Zanni

Canyon Acupuncture is located at 6109 Rose Ave in historic Dunsmuir, CA, a place of healing, nurturing and preventative care. Where Heaven meets earth under the watchful eye of Mt. Shasta’s peak, along where the mighty Upper Sacramento River flows. This successful practice was established 5 years ago by David Filipello, L.Ac., a licensed acupuncturist by the State of California. Mr. Filipello brings his 30+ years of Traditional Chinese Medicine experience to the Siskiyou County area to serve the needs of his community.

Mr. Filipello states “I strongly feel that the medicine of the future is an integration of Alernative and Allopathic (Western medicine as we know it) modalities. My calling as a healer influences my possibility as an educator. Like the Great Tao, neither Alternative nor Allopathic medicine is better – they are only parts of the whole. Together they offer a complete and holistic healing by complementing the human body’s power to heal itself.”

Traditional Chinese Medicine, like many alternative medicines, approaches balanced health by addressing the body’s Qi, or energy, in such a way as to benefit the whole of the body – the physical, the emotional and spiritual bodies. By doing so, harmony can be attained and many illnesses can be dealt with preventatively before they can manifest. Lao Tzu, a famed Chinese healer and philosopher once said “Anticipate the difficult by managing the easy.” Canyon Acupuncture offers convenient office hours Monday thru Friday by appointment only. Fees are on a sliding scale and many insurance plans are accepted. Appointments can be made by calling 530-235-4054. Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce welcome CASA of Siskiyou County

L to R: Vicky Zanni representing the Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce, Kassie Wheeler, Outreach & Training Coordinator, Cliff Lantz, Executive Director and Vonnie Greenley, President-CASA Board of Directors

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Siskiyou County is the newest member of the Mt. Shasta Chamber of Commerce.  CASA recruits, screens, and trains local volunteers to become stable, caring friends and a strong voice in court to advocate for abused and neglected children.

Although the CASA office is located in Yreka, the agency serves abused and neglected children in all parts of Siskiyou County and is hoping to encourage community members in the Mt. Shasta area to get involved.  Currently, Siskiyou County has 200 children in the juvenile dependency system and only ten CASA volunteers in the south county.

The goal of CASA is to prevent abused, neglected, and abandoned children from becoming lost in the system and working to find them safe, permanent homes as soon as possible.

CASA volunteers help by meeting with the child, gathering information from all interested parties (attorneys, social workers, teachers, etc.), keeping an eye out for any unmet needs of the child, and writing a court report to the judge about their findings.  CASA volunteers are unique in providing information not usually available to the court.  Because of the enormous number of cases filed in juvenile court and dwindling resources to adequately investigate cases, judges are often compelled to make decisions based on less than complete data.  A CASA’s objective, unbiased recommendation to support the best interest of the child is an invaluable aid to the judge.  Advocates also attend court hearings regarding the child (usually once every six months) and monitor the case until the child is placed into a safe, permanent, and nurturing home.

CASA volunteers ultimately help to change a child’s life for a brighter future, and they can help to end the cycle of abuse and neglect.  Among many other benefits, CASA volunteers also have an opportunity to learn about the juvenile court system and become actively involved in our community.

For more information or to become a volunteer visit www.siskiyoucasa.org or call (530) 841-0844. Volunteers are always needed!

Mt. Shasta welcomes the Gilden Lodge

Gilden

L to R: Scotty Bates, Chamber of Commerce board member, Tim Stearns, Mayor of Mt Shasta, Suzie and Nic Fabrio owner of the lodge and Vicky Zanni, representative of the Chamber of Commerce.

It was our dream to build a log cabin in the mountains that could be a place of ultimate retreat from the stress and clamor of everyday life – a place of peace and tranquility, where you could unwind and get back to nature. We found the perfect piece of land just outside the town of Mount Shasta that had amazing views of the mountains in all directions, and then we spent 5 years building the cabin ourselves- and now we believe that we have accomplished our dream with the creation of Gilden Lodge.

We designed every detail in the cabin ourselves, from the fireplace to the stained glass windows. The logs we chose are hand peeled Douglas Fir – we wanted to create a totally hand crafted home that is both unique and individualistic. We scoured reclamation yards, and salvage shops to find interesting and unusual items to use in the lodge. We tried to use old materials wherever possible to create a house that is both eclectic and environmentally friendly. The guests who have stayed with us so far seem to have had a fun and relaxing time, and have been generous in their praise of the cabin.

Here are a few of the comments some of our guests have made-

“the ultimate hipster cabin”

“has a warm vibe built into the cabin”

“the house has a warm and welcoming feel that makes people want to stay”

“after getting into the lodge we never wanted to go out again”

Mount Shasta turned out to be the perfect location for our dream home – the town is small enough to be friendly and welcoming, but big enough to have the shops, restaurants and facilities that visitors are looking for in a vacation destination – not to mention the amazing outdoor activities & the thousands of square miles of forest that surround the town making it perfect for nature lovers and outdoor sportsmen. For reservation call 926-1293 or visit gildenlodge.com

Melody Perdikis’ new location in Mt. Shasta

P1010015

L to R: Scotty Bates, Chamber Board Member, Nathan Sivananda, Sulena Sivananda, Heather Erickson, Chamber Board Member, Tim Sterns, Melody Perdikis, Vicky Zanni.

Melody Perdikis, Licensed Massage Therapist, would like to welcome new and existing clients to her new location. She has moved her practice to the office of Dr. Nathan Sivananda, Chiropractor, located at 1180 S. Mt. Shasta Blvd.

As the cool autumn winds signal the changing seasons, it becomes more important than ever to keep our bodies healthy. Receiving regular massage sessions is a great way to keep our immune system strong. It’s a healthy treat we all deserve.

Melody has been providing massage therapy services throughout Siskiyou County since 1997. She became interested in bodywork while working as a physical therapy aide for Mercy Outpatient Physical Therapy. During this time, Melody increased her knowledge of kinesiology, therapeutic exercises and stretching. From this foundation, Melody attended Ashland Institute of Massage in Ashland, OR and became licensed in 1996.

Melody’s main disciplines are deep tissue therapy any myofascial release. She has found these techniques most effective in treating clients with acute injuries and/or difficult chronic pain conditions. Other modalities include hot stone therapy, aromatherapy, Chi Nei Tsang oriental internal organ massage, and therapeutic stretching.

Along with these offerings, Melody continues to expand her knowledge of the healing arts by attending yearly continuing education courses. She recently attended a course in Neuromuscular Therapy for the neck. This technique is beneficial for neck pain and stiffness, headaches, TMJ syndrome and other upper body conditions.

Melody has been seeing clients at the new location since February and she has found it very convenient for clients that also receive chiropractic adjustments from Dr. Sivananda. Together, Chiropractic and massage facilitate the natural healing power by keeping the body in proper alignment, while ensuring a free-flow of nerve impulses and circulation fluids.

Massage therapy sessions are scheduled Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Some Saturday appointments are available with advance notice. Melody also offers on-site home visits for an additional charge. Seniors receive a discount for services. In addition, gift certificates are available for holidays and special occasions.

Receiving massage therapy on a regular basis is very healthy to the mind, body and soul. Appointments can be made by calling Melody at 530-926-0507, or visit www.massagebymelody.com.

Mount Shasta Pastry opens

MtShastaPastry

L to R: Mark Clure, Mt. Shasta Chamber of Commerce board member, Michael Murray, Mt. Shasta Mayor Pro-tem, Barbara Schmidt, Karen Niles, Lauren Blackford, Laurie Blackford, owners Jessica and Steve Hector, Vicky Zanni, chamber representative.

For Steve and Jessica Hector, their move to Mt. Shasta five years ago seemed like the ideal situation. Jessica was able to continue her career with the Postal Service, and Steve was successfully expanding a territory of organic foods across the North State. Then in 2008 Steve was laid off, becoming another casualty of the great recession. Throughout the winter Steve expanded his job search in an increasingly failing economy. “Fortunately, we were always frugal and saved for that rainy day, which was now upon us”. Steve began using his time re-reading his books from culinary school, called upon his 25 years of chef experience and began baking for his friends and family. The response was positive.

Thus the seeds of “Mount Shasta Pastry” were sown. “In essence, I am buying myself a job” says Steve. “I found this vacant building in tremendous disrepair, but to me it looked like it had potential for a small bakery café. Jessica and I did our research, and decided to make a go of it”.

“The goal is to provide the community with an alternative to the poor quality preservative and additive-laced Costco-type product for high quality baked goods that are delicious.”

Mount Shasta Pastry makes all of their products fresh daily, on site, with all natural ingredients and contain no preservatives or additives. There is a variety of scones, croissants, turnovers and much more. Light lunches offer gourmet pizza, focaccia and croissant sandwiches, fresh salads and hearty soup made daily by Steve. Located 610 S. Mt. Shasta Blvd., open Monday thru Saturday 6:00 am to 2:30 pm.

Mount Shasta’s Trinity Cafe

P1010001

Pictured right to left:
Scotty Bates, Chamber Board Member and Trinity Café Maitre d’, Trinity Café employees Seth Stanton, Kerrie Montgomery, Kevin Lahey, and Chamber Board Member Heather Brown.

The Trinity Café celebrates Billy Truby re-assuming ownership of the fifteen-year-old establishment in April of this year.  Truby previously owned the Trinity Café from 2002-2008 and also owns The Goat Tavern.  Much of the Trinity is back as it was prior to the operating choices of last year’s temporary management.  It still offers both indoor and outside seating, an international selection of wine, served alongside the upscale atmosphere and food; but without the upscale prices.  With the old comes the new, like Chef Seth Stanton’s dinner menu, which changes regularly and offers fifteen items at $10 or less.  In the $18 – $25 range, customers may dine on Scallops served with sweet pea risotto, oyster mushrooms, and tarragon pesto or the Filet Mignon paired with broccolini, buttermilk whipped potatoes, and bleu cheese butter.  The extensive wine list offers a variety of wines from places like California’s Napa Valley, Italy, and Spain with bottle prices varying from Cline’s Cashmere at $28 to the $80 Marchesi di Barolo. Many wines are offered by the glass as well.  In addition to the Trinity Café’s Tuesday through Saturday dinner hours of 5pm to 9pm, Chef Kevin Lahey cooks up Sunday Brunch every week from 9am to 2pm.  Lahey’s fresh made to order brunch menu includes traditional items like Eggs Benedict with house made Hollandaise sauce, Blueberry Pancakes, and more inventive choices like Huevos Mt. Shasta with fresh roasted green green chiles and the ever-popular Guacamole Benedict. Locals and travelers alike are very excited to have fine dining again in Mount Shasta.  The Trinity Café is located at 622 North Mount Shasta Boulevard and reservations may be made by calling 926-6200.
