Siskiyou County’s First Naturopathic Medical Clinic Opens

L to R: Heather Weldon, Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce Board Member, Bonnie Cage and Dr. Arlan Cage, owners;  Marsha Yates, receptionist, medical assistant and Barefoot massage therapist; Jim Mullins, Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce Board Member.

Mount Shasta Natural Healing is Siskiyou County’s first Naturopathic Medical Clinic.  Founded by Dr. Arlan Cage, ND, LAc, he will be offering holistic, primary health care for all ages.  The clinic will be treating everything from acute illness such as colds & flus or digestive issues, to chronic illnesses such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, infertility and other chronic illnesses,

Dr. Cage is both a licensed Naturopathic Doctor and a licensed Acupuncturist.  Naturopathic medicine is a system of holistic health care based in Western traditions.  Naturopathic doctors attend 4-year, accredited graduate programs, earning a Doctoral degree in Naturopathic Medicine, and are licensed by the state as primary care doctors.  Acupuncturists also attend graduate school, achieving a Masters degree in Oriental Medicine, and are independently licensed as well.  Being trained in both Eastern and Western systems of holistic health care, Dr. Cage is able to offer the best of both worlds for his patients.  Doctor Cage assesses each patient individually, and uses safe, effective treatment methods including homeopathy, herbal medicines, nutrition, hydrotherapy and acupuncture.

“I like teaching patients to be pro-active about their health”, he says.  “Virtually all of the modern, chronic diseases we are experiencing an epidemic of – heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer – are primarily caused by nutritional and lifestyle factors which each person can control, when they are taught how”.

One of the most important things each person can do is to lose weight, which reduces the risk of all the chronic illnesses.  Mount Shasta Natural Healing is offering a number of methods of natural weight loss programs, as well as natural treatment methods for infertility and heart disease, as well as proactive programs for prevention, wellness and longevity.

Mount Shasta Martial Arts Program has found a new home

SMALLER KIDS STANDING & KNEELING, L-to-R: Greg Duarte (kneeling behind scissors), Sasha Tveritin, Clara Dyson, Tristan Turner (behind scissors), Mateo Mclaughlin (behind Tristan), Thomas Rowley (hands up), Kyle Van Laekin (big smile), James Rowley, Adam Hanna, Vova Tveritin. Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce Board Members: Heather Weldon and Vince Reinig on the left; Brett Waite and Cindy Corrales on the right.

Excitement at the Mount Shasta Martial Arts Program (founded 2001) is at an all-time high celebrating its ongoing activity program at a new, convenient location and giving away free uniforms to individuals that sign-up for three months in advance.

“MSMAP offers a unique blend of the old and the new by combining traditional martial arts values like discipline, defense, and respect with a modern and dynamic training program,” says head instructor Chuck Buhs.

“We provide a proven creative outlet for boys and girls seeking a positive environment developing physical and social skills,” adds Buhs. “Educators and participants alike see the results firsthand and praise our simple mission to help people make decisions based on intelligence and confidence rather than fear and ignorance. Just call us South County’s first-stop for anti-bully strategies.”

Following an impressive opening demonstration at ShastaYama in August, MSMAP participated in a weeklong lunchtime activity program at MSE in September and will be in action for an exciting martial arts demonstration at Castle Rock for an all-school assembly next month.

Founding Instructor Dr. Peter Halt emphasizes, “MSMAP is not just for kids—it provides separate training sessions for teens and adults also.” Older participants looking for that additional edge, work one- on-one with Buhs, a two-time yongmudo champion (2006, 2010) and Best Male Competitor in 2010.

According to Buhs, “Martial arts training is an action philosophy — deeds trump talking. Our program affirms the benefits of an active lifestyle tempered by a humble spirit to achieve really big things.”

“But, don’t take our word for it,” Buhs adds with a grin. “Come in, speak with our participants, and take advantage of our no-risk two- week free trial.”

The Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce welcomes its newest member

L to R: Larry Mower, Lt. Governor, Redding-Chico area; Jerry Sanchez, Yreka/Weed/Lake Shastina Kiwanis Member and New Club Counselor; Amy Butcheri, Charter Member; Joyce Oliver, Board Director; Marla Anderson, Member; Cheryl Sanchez, Secretary; Lila Mower, First Lady; Muriel Terrell, Treasurer; Elizabeth Mitchell-Collord, President-Elect; Karen Pautz, Acting President; Tom Moore, Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce Board Member; Maxine Lopey (not pictured)

The newly formed Mount Shasta 5-Star Kiwanis Club will begin its inaugural charter year on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 and, according to acting president Karen Pautz, “we’re looking for a few exceptional Mt. Shasta area women to complete our membership of twenty five .”  Pautz, who serves as executive director of Siskiyou County’s 12-year old First 5 Children & Families Commission, explains that Kiwanis is a global endeavor, with over 600,000 members in 89 countries. “There has never been a Kiwanis Club in Mount Shasta, even though Yreka, Lake Shastina and Weed have had Kiwanians for several decades, dating back to 1965,” Pautz explained, “but Mount Shasta has been left out and now we’re ready to go, with service projects that benefit children and young adults”.

One of those service projects will be the establishment of a Service Leadership Program which will entail starting a Builders Club at Sisson  for grades 6, 7 & 8 (middle schoolers) and a K-Kids Club at Mt. Shasta Elementary School. “There’s already an active Key Club at Mount Shasta High School, so when K-Kids and Builders Club reach high school they are prepared to render even more altruistic service to their communities.”

“Our society, sadly, has become complacent to a large degree and focused on “me” and “mine”. We believe it is important that children grow up with a sense of helping each other and volunteering their time and effort to make something better. This is our chance to get our young people involved.”

Kiwanis of Mt. Shasta has received the support of Shasta Dam Kiwanis, who will lead every step of the way in the birth of the new club. If you are one of these “exceptional” women who want to join in the quest to make a difference in the lives of children, please call 530-925-2409 for more information and/or an application.
