about the Jobs in the county. I have had nothing but problems from Cities thru the County. We tossed an Idea in the County 2 months ago and had over 191 calls for opening info. Some cities in the county are req to have elected officals vote if they want business? unreal this is America It seems to me unless you have the money you will be on that shadow of the wealthy. look around how many vacation rentals you have. people here buy blocks not buildings. they talk about help like Jedi.HA it cost how much to join for a membership? it cost how much to join Chamber? empty buildings for rent all over, You dont make it easy for anyone just the ones with Money.. sorry to say the problem is the elected. I look at this occupy the world. and think Same here just on a smaller level.

One persons opinion:
Vince Reinig's article on the value of a "leakage analysis" and understanding emerging technologies and their value and application in our community is simply excellent. Since I talk with folks who do not read/receive this newletter or read the paper for that matter, I suggest that the Chamber distribute copies to every business in Mt. Shasta, members or not.

Additionally, an announcement of detailed plans for a "leakage" analyis should be included, along with how it will be conducted and how it will be communicated and key to this will be, an easy accesable way for recipients to become involved. A significant number of personal interviews would be beneficial and should be used in publishing the results.
Further, emerging technologies and their possible long and short term applications for our current business owners, and possible new businesses is an excellent idea. It communicates reality. The key to this is to relate it to our community--a "I feel--and understand your pain communication approach
Thank you Vince for this stimulating article. I admire your busincess acumen and your willingness to take the time to write about this serious issue.

Barbara:

Welcome to the neighborhood! This is truly God's Country.

The issues we face here in the Mt. Shasta area and Siskiyou County at large are (in my opinion) high unemployment and a high level of dependence on tax dollars for our economic base. What we also have is a drop dead gorgeous place whose reputation for pristine beauty and outdoor recreation grows larger every year. We have a thriving tourist economy, although it is down somewhat lately in reaction to the larger economic picture, it is still one of our primary economic drivers.

What I would like to see however, is a bit more diversity in our economic base. I support tourism but am hopeful that we can improve our economic climate with additional types of business - without negatively impacting our physical environment.

California is always at the forefront of technological invention/adoption - my hope is that we can find a way to capitalize on some of those new technologies right here. And so I ask for your ideas - lets talk, debate and find the facts about what is and what is not possible for our area.

I first visited Mt. Shasta City 10 years ago, and bought a home here one year later, knowing I belonged here and had to return to live here when I could. Finally, I am moving my residence and law practice up to Mt. Shasta in late 2011 (from San Francisco/Marin), and am so looking forward to living full-time in this beautiful place.

I would like to educate myself about the issues facing my new hometown. Vince, what are the issues facing Mt. Shasta City in terms of protecting the physical and economic environment?
