2009 Chamber EventsFebruary 6 — Annual Awards DinnerYou're invited to the Mt. Shasta Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. The banquet will be held at the City Park, Nixon Rd. It begins at 5:30 pm with a no-host bar social hour. Dinner, catered by Keith & Patti Cool from Mt. Shasta Supermarket, begins at 6:30 pm. Chicken, tri-tip, bread, salad and dessert will be served, and vegetarian lasagna is available upon request. Reservations are required, seats are limited. Tickets available at the Mt. Shasta Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau at 300 Pine Street or by calling 530-926-3696 ext 201. June 21-27 — Climb Against the OddsThirty-five breast cancer survivors, supporters and others impacted by the disease will challenge Mt. Shasta's peak this June as part of the Breast Cancer Fund's Climb Against the Odds mountain expedition. Their journey is both a collective effort to prevent breast cancer and a personal challenge to beat the disease. Besides training for the peak attempt, climbers commit to raising a minimum of $5,000 for the Breast Cancer Fund's work to prevent the disease. July 2-4 — 4th of July CelebrationJoin the fun-run/walk at 8:30 am, parade at noon , and fireworks over Lake Siskiyou at dusk. Booths and live music downtown. A big celebration for a small town! August 1 — ShastaYama Taiko FestivalIn the alpine beauty of Mount Shasta a cultural phenomenon has taken hold. Taiko — Japanese drumming — is gaining popularity worldwide and has found its way to Mt. Shasta, CA . Twenty-four years ago, musicians Russel Baba and Jeanne Mercer founded Shasta Taiko, and their taiko program has had a direct impact on the development of American Taiko. Saturday evening, at the base of majestic Mt. Shasta, the 5th annual ShastaYama Festival will once again entertain and inspire audiences with a spectacle of Japanese drumming, dance, and music. Last year's festival attracted over a thousand concert-goers, who experienced world class artistry in the dramatic venue of Mt. Shasta's Shastice Park. August 2 — Summit Century Bike RideWhy not ride the prettiest, toughest century in California? The Super Century is like a "Tour de France" mountain stage. Cloverleaf route allows you to bail out if you're cooked, the finish is nearby. The event features four different rides, each distinct and with many challenges. All rides include food and refreshments at various rest stops, lunch and dinner at the city park finish. For information call 1-800-926-4865. September 5-6 — Cool Mountain NightsCelebrate the end of summer on Labor Day Weekend; on Saturday enjoy a Classic Car Show 'n Shine and a downtown street fair. Sunday is the Tinman Triathlon at Lake Siskiyou in the morning, the annual Blackberry Music Festival in the afternoon at City Park. For additional information call 1-800-926-4865. TBA — Music by the MountainAn exciting new summer chamber music festival in the Mt. Shasta area in northern California, now in its fourth year. It aims to have a broad impact within the community by bringing world class musicians to the area not only to perform, but to teach and interact personally with young musicians. November 27 — Christmas Tree Lighting and Merchant Open HouseGather in front of city hall to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season. Join in as carols are sung by candlelight. Enchantingly the community Christmas tree, all the trees lining the streets downtown and the holiday decorations are lit at once. Santa drives by on a fire truck, he is on his way to his workshop located at the fire station. Santa and his elves will be building toys and baking. Monthly HappeningsJanuary 3rd, Saturday — DunsmuirFresh Fire will perform at 8:30pm at Sengthong's Blue Sky Room. The group is unveiling their new CD. The Blue Sky Room is located at 5841 Dunsmuir Ave. January 3rd, Saturday — WeedThe Weed Mercantile will host an Acoustic Bluegrass Jam beginning at 2pm. January 4th, Sunday — Mt. ShastaThe Stage Door Cabaret, 414 N. Mt. Shasta Blvd. presents Joel Williams and the Sweet Thingys. Enjoy an evening of alternative rock. Cover charge is $5. Call 530-926-1050 for info. January 18th, Sunday — Mt. ShastaA beginner Skate Skiing Clinic will begin at 9am and end at noon at the Nordic Center, Ski Park Hwy. Registration begins at 8:30am. Cost is $35 and is limited to twelve participants. Class will be taught by Craig Vivas who is a PSIA level 2 certified instructor. January 22nd-25th, Thursday-Sunday — Mt. Shasta & WeedJoin in the fun and excitement of the Siskiyou Sled Dog Races. This 4 day event offers banquets, receptions, ceremonies, merchandise and children's events. The opening ceremony will be held Thursday January 22nd in Mt. Shasta at the Woodsman's Hotel, 1121 S. Mt. Shasta Blvd. The full schedule of events is available there or at the Mt. Shasta Visitors Bureau. January 24th, Saturday — Mt. ShastaThe friends of Mt. Shasta Avalanche Center proudly presents the 7th Annual Snowball at the Mt. Shasta City Park. Live music by The Bucky Walters Band. Dinner and dance tickets are $27 and starts at 6:30 pm. Dance only is $15 and starts at 8 pm. There will also be a raffle and silent auction. Tickets are available at Village Books, Shasta Base Camp and The Fifth Season. For further info go to FMSAC.org. January 24th, Saturday — Mt. ShastaThe Stage Door Cabaret, 414 N. Mt. Shasta Blvd. will be host to the Mt. Shasta Writers and presents an acclaimed performance by artist/writer Garland Thompson and open mic poetry. Call 530-926-1050 for info. January 31st, Saturday — WeedSons of Italy Weed Lodge #1269 is having its Annual Crab Feed. Social hour begins at 5:30 pm and dinner begins at 7 pm. Dinner includes fresh crab, spaghetti sauce with pasta, salad, rolls, coffee and dessert. Tickets are $22 per person and must be purchased in advance. Tickets are not available at the door. Enjoy an afternoon of happy foot-tapping and the relentlessly swinging music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, Nat King Cole Glenn Miller, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and many, many more.
